Involved in a great effort to restore the Finger Ground Cemetery (formerly the Old Plattekill Cemetery), the Gravestone Guardians have prepared a nice 7-page document from which the following excerpt was taken:
"The Finger Ground is the resting place of twelve Revolutionary War veterans and one veteran of the War of 1812, men who were not distant heroes from a textbook but local farmers, fathers, neighbors, and citizen-soldiers. They left their fields and families to serve in the Ulster County Militia and related units, returned home, and answered the call again as the Revolution pressed on. Their lives remind us that the struggle for independence was not carried by famous names alone, but by ordinary people whose sacrifices were woven into the daily life of this region. In this quiet place, the founding of the nation becomes personal, local, and real.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the Finger Ground offers Saugerties a rare opportunity to preserve not only a cemetery, but a living connection to the generation that built the nation."

They received a surprise visit from Bill Murphy, Mayor of the Village of Saugerties, and Fred Costello, Town of Saugerties Supervisor, plus a special guest, Charlie the dog.
Costello shared what the town oversees, including the Highway Department, the Water Department, and why dog licenses matter. He also explained New York’s election calendar reset, which moves many local elections from odd-numbered years to even-numbered years to align with state and federal elections and encourage more people to vote. Because of this change, even though he recently campaigned and won, he will need to run again next year. Something many adults don't even know about.

If so, please see the upcoming FREE training opportunities that a company named Guardian Revival is hosting. These sessions, some of which are on site (within an hour or so drive from Saugerties -- Carmel and Beacon) and some of which are virtual (Zoom) sessions, begin in March and run through December.
Typical attendees might be active and retired military and first responders, clinicians, or other mental health professionals/advocates serving the veteran & first responder populations.
The classes are titled "Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST)", "Talk Saves Lives", and "Mental Health First Aid".
